The women of Awo Omamma turned out in strength this past weekend for a massive medical outreach mission spearheaded by none other than our very own champion, Chief Akudee Duru. Over 300 women were served through the two-day health drive held at the community center.
Chief Duru hired doctors, nurses, midwives, and other medical volunteers to offer a range of critical services. These included general health exams, reproductive health education, prenatal care, cancer screenings, family planning resources, prescription glasses, tooth extractions, and more. Medications and nutrients were also distributed to treat immediate needs and combat long-term deficiencies.
Most of these women struggle to access or afford healthcare through traditional channels. Chief Duru’s intervention brought lifesaving care directly to their neighborhood, free of charge. Her hands-on support and words of empowerment reminded the women that their health and dignity matter.
The mission was a resounding success. An elderly grandmother had an infected wound treated, allowing her to finally walk without pain. Another woman discovered and began addressing hypertension before it caused a stroke. Dozens of malnutrition pregnant women gained access to vitamins and nutrients for healthier babies.
As one attendee emotionally noted, “Chief Duru gave the gift of taking care of myself – and showed me I deserve to be healthy and alive.” That encapsulates the event’s immeasurable impact. Beyond physical care, it bravely told women from all walks of life: that they are worthy. Their community stands ready to lift them.
We thank Chief Duru for her vision and generosity. Through missions like these, she plants seeds of empowerment that blossom into better futures, families, and communities for generations. Our columnist highlights more of Chief Duru’s incredible work later in this edition.
